Students in my Gr 12 media literacy class have been trying to gather
'particles of truth' about the Iraq/UN(US) conflict. We watched an A&E
Biography episode on Saddam Hussein. It was the best example of propaganda
one could hope to find. We read an article in the January/98 issue of the
New Internationalist magazine which described the consequences of sanctions
on the people of Iraq. 1,200,000 children have died as a direct result of
these sanctions.(UNICEF STATS). We verified these stats via the internet.
4,500 children continue to die per month. We are trying to figure out if
this should be called a holocaust. Webster's said we could. My students are
confused; they can figure out why this isn't on the news or making
headlines.I think I might illegally tape(civil disobedience TOM?) the PBS
documentary that someone kindly mentioned on FW recently: Fear and Favour
in the Newsroom. This hopefully will help me helpmy students understand
another particle of truth.
Perhaps I should have taken them to Ottawa to greet the visiting US
Secretary of State last week. What small act of civil disobedience would
have been appropriate?
