"EDITORIAL: UNDERSTANDING GLOBALIZATION"

>At this point, globalization means that capital is free to roam
>the world in search of cheap labor since every worker is competing
>against all the rest as never before. The inevitable result is the
>lowering of living standards for all the workers and absolute
>poverty for most.

Does it necessarily follow that "lowering of living standards for all
workers and absolute poverty for most" follows from capital's "roaming of
the world in search of cheap labour".
I think not.
Surely it must improve the living standards of some individuals in less well
off countries.
Richer countries may have to "pay" for their lesser well off neighbours but
our standard of living on average is much higher.
Is part of the "problem" with globalization, that Western nations will have
to take a pay cut! (( washes mouth out with soap and water )) ;-)
Are we concerned about how globalisation affects the whole world or only
part of it.

Tony

BTW I don't like the arrogance of multinational companies. Here's a poem I
penned several years ago after a bad experience with "Big Blue" also
identified by the acronym of "Incredibly Bloody Minded".

                        BIG BLUE
We're BIG and we're Blue and we will hurt you
If you so much as complain,
We're strong and we're mean,
It can easily be seen we like to cause nothing but pain,

So if you're new to 'puting then you're easy meat,
We'll flog you and beat you it will be such a treat,
So don't you call us then we won't call you, <Sinister>
'Cause we're BIG and we're Blue and we will hurt you.
