The famous conflict researcher Johan Galtung in his article "the balkanisation of Europe" describes the parallels between former Yugoslavia and the EU -- an economic community built "from above" to profit from a common market, with many historical "open bills" inside and outside -- and he concludes: "Time will tell whether the EU of Maastricht (1993) will live as long as Yugoslavia-II (1945-1990)."
