FTAA’S RELIEF EFFORTS FOR THE EARTHQUAKE

The fundraising efforts of the Federation have expanded drastically
following the endorsement of Mayor Giuliani on August 19, 1999. The initial
outreach for contributions has received enormous support. The Secretary
General of the organization Egemen Bagis and the Vice President in charge of
Relief Efforts, Nevzat Ayar, have announced that the funds collected in their
special Earthquake relief account have exceeded $132,000 within six business
days. Most of the checks come in handwritten envelopes along with small
notes, cards and prayers that have been posted on a board at the Federation’s
office at 821 United Nations Plaza. The bulletin board also indicates their
goal, which is $5,000,000. --

They also acknowledged the cooperation of other organizations and
expressed their appreciation for the support received during these times of
sorrow. They stated that John Hopkins University’s SHARE-Turkey (Supply
Hospitals Abroad with Resources and Equipment) program sent large quantities
of medical supplies and AT&T’s charity group, Telephone Pioneers of America
has indicated interest to donate 2000 Hug-A-Bears for children victims of the
earthquake. An anonymous company in Long Island has promised to donate 3,000
pairs of men’s working boots. Turkish American Physicians’ Association has
sent 28 pallets of medical supplies. The New York Hilton Hotel gave
approximately 100 over-coats and also informed all of their employees that
the corporation will match the employees’ donation dollar to dollar. The
White House sent a letter to the Federation’s President, Dr. M. Ata Erim,
expressing President Clinton’s "heartfelt condolences over the tragic
earthquake". In her letter to Dr. Erim, the Deputy Assistant to the President
for National Security Affairs, Mara E. Rudman wrote; "We share your sadness
over the loss of life, injuries, and destruction. We are doing all we can to
help with rescue and assistance efforts".

Federation’ Senior Executive Vice President, Dr.Kaya Buyukataman, who
has been coordination the internet activities of the Federation and the
Earthquake Relief Fund announced that the donation made over the internet has
reached $20,000 and the number of e-mail sorrow and condolence messages
received by the organization is more that 60,000. Two of the Federation’s
Vice Presidents Onur Erim and Mr. Nurettin Caliskan are currently in Turkey
helping out on the field. Mr. Bagis shared anecdotes of a telephone
conversation with Mr. Caliskan who indicated that the scenes he witnessed are
unimaginable… Mr. Caliskan’s own parents and sister lost their homes in
Yalova.

Secretary General Egemen Bagis said: "The death toll is expected to rise
over 40,000 according to the United Nations’ estimates and hundreds of
thousands are seriously injured and/or affected. The victims need our help.
Our organization’s campaign will hopefully provide some relief to the victims
of this tragic disaster. We are grateful to President Clinton, and the U.S.
media for their support. At this time we are accepting monetary
contributions. 100% of the collected funds will be sent to Turkey. We are
asking everyone to send their contributions by writing their checks to
FTAA-EARTHQUAKE RELIEF FUND and mail it to Federation of Turkish American
Associations at 821 United Nations Plaza, 2nd Floor, New York, NY 10017. Our
doors are open to volunteers who can spare time to help us with our mailing,
telephone and flyer distribution campaign. Donations can also be charged to
MC or VIZA cards through Federation’s web site t http:/www.ftaa.org
