Herrick Feinstein, LLP makes a major contribution to FTAA's earthquake
relief fund.
One of New York's most respected and prominent law firms, Herrick
Feinstein, LLP, has made a substantial donation to FTAA's earthquake
relief fund.
As the Federation President Dr. M. Ata Erim and the Secretary General
Egemen Bagis accepted the donation check from Herrick Feinstein Attorney,
Mr. Barbaros Karaahmetoglu, they thanked the law firm on behalf of the
Turkish Community and the victims of the earthquake, which believed to
cost approximately 40,000 human lives.
Herrick Feinstein, LLP has been very effective in representing Turkish
Government in the past and especially successful in obtaining the
archeological pieces back to Turkey. The representatives of the firm, Mr.
Karaahmetoglu stated that his firm is also contributing to the earthquake
relief funds of other major Turkish American organizations.
Senior Vice President of FTAA, Kaya Buyukataman informed that the total
monetary contributions collected by FTAA as of today have exceeded
$215,000 and that donors can make contributions using
their credit cards on the Federation's website: www.FTAA.org.

TO TURKISH AMERICAN COMMUNITY AND AMERICAN FRIENDS OF TURKEY

Dear Friends:
As Turkey is slowly recovering from the shocking earthquake that laid
waste much of the heartland of the country^Òs industrial region, it has
become clear that significant foreign aid and investment is necessary
for a speedy recovery. Throughout this tragedy many countries have come
to our assistance and yet, as always, the United States has lead the way
in what has become one of the major relief efforts of the century.
However, as many of you will know, the devastation was so great and so
widespread that it is expected that Turkey may take a good few years to
recover.
Now the US Administration is preparing to do more. President Clinton
will present Congress with a $12 billion foreign aid package that will
also include up to $300 million in relief aid to Turkey. This proposal
will be one of the first ones that Congress will take up once it starts
its new session. The aid bill will most likely be discussed next week.
Turkey has voluntarily refused to receivee any US aid for over two
years. But this disaster aid package can help Turkey^Òs recovery efforts.
Therefore, we urge Turkish-Americans and friends of Turkey to pick up your
pens and write a letter of support to your Representative and Senators so
that they are in no doubt as to the importance of this package to T
urkish-American community. In this letter, Congressmen should be reminded
of the strategic importance of Turkey, and the fact that this devastating
earthquake has not only killed thousands of people but that it also struck
at the industrial heartland of the country. It is imperative that these
letters are written individually and mailed or faxed to either the
Washington office of your local Congressman or to their regional offices.
The following are some of the themes that could be included in your
letters:
1) Turkey's importance to the United States both economically and
politically.
2) A reminder of Turkey's long-time support of the United States
3) The size and proportion of the earthquake, its long-term effects on
Turkey and the significance of the US relief package
