B.C. Health Coalition News Release

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE March 7, 2000

BREAKING . . . Seniors, students, health care workers occupy M.P.'s West
End office, 1030 Denman

Medicare advocates say Ottawa must take immediate action to stop Klein
from legalizing private hospitals

Vancouver -- Seniors, students, health care workers and others have
occupied Hedy Fry's West End office this morning. They say they'll stay
until they're given assurances that the Vancouver Centre MP will take
their concerns about the future of Medicare to her cabinet colleagues
Health Minister Allan Rock, Finance Minister Paul Martin, and the Prime
Minister.

They're taking part in a national action by Medicare advocates that
targets the constituency offices of high profile Liberal cabinet ministers
in an effort to hold the federal government accountable for its failure to
defend Canada's Medicare system.

The Canadian Health Coalition is pressing the federal government to
implement a five-point plan to save Medicare that includes significantly
increased federal health care funding, action to stop [Alberta Premier,
Ralph] Klein's private hospital legislation, an expansion of Medicare to
include a national system of home and community care, a moratorium on
public-private partnerships in health care and the exclusion of health
care and social services from trade agreements.
