*Dental problems stymie Guard call-ups*

Fort Lewis, Washington – About 30 percent of the 4,500 National Guard members called to active duty in Washington last year had dental conditions that made them undeployable until their teeth were fixed.

[snip]

If anyone is looking for an argument *against* "intelligent design", I propose
one need look no further than one's own and others' teeth.

If the rest of our bodily parts worked as badly as our teeth, the number
of doctors needed would probably exceed the size of the population.

For just one item, there's "wisdom teeth" which often
don't fit the size of the mouth and therefore
threaten to turn the rest of the teeth into more
like a breakwater than proper choppers (have you
ever seen a beach full of big concrete things that look
like huge jacks (as in the child's game of "ball and jacks"),
to try to keep the see at bay, e.g., at Niigata Japan?).

Then there's Heinz Kohut's insight about things that
are frequent or even ubiquitous not being therefore
normal or, a fortiori, healthy/healthful. One of the examples
Kohut cited was dental caries before fluoridation of the
water supply.

Even my poor cats are victims of maldentia: The vet explained
to me that a major reason why many cats die of kidney failure
is that periodontal infection becomes systemic. (Yes, I know,
Harry, in a free market, they wouldn't live long enough
to succumb to such a condition of artificial regulation....)
