Things are going well -- and largely peacefully -- in the south because the
British army and the local governers appointed by the UK War Office have long
given up any semblance of control in the whole of the province. They don't have
anything to do. It is now effectively governed by Grand Ayatollah al-Sistani
and security established by Moqtada al-Sadr.
Things are going well in the north -- and almost totally peacefully (except for
Sunni intruders) -- and have been so for 14 years now, being self-governed by
the Kurds with an elected government of their own.
It is only in central and western Iraq where things are not peaceful
and where there is no government or security -- whether of the Americans, or
the transitional 'government' or the Sunnis, or what have you.
Iraq
doesn't exist as a country any longer. It has been three ethnic regions for
centuries. It never has been a country except by being held down by force. And
now, the American occupiers can't even do that. Central and Western
Iraq will never be at peace until there's been a bloodbath.
I'm afraid that your media don't give you the whole picture.
