This great idea is already happening, though not as an openly directed
provincial goal. Actually many people feel that Asians are driving up the prices
around here. That's only partially true. Americans account for 18-25% of the
increase, but most people are Canadian--mostly government retirees
on healthy pensions. So more seniors would fit in well, and our healthcare
system is gearing up for more to come.
But you know, those that can will come to southern B.C. because we do have
the weather seniors enjoy. Once you've been here, it's difficult to settle
for any other region. We are overjoyed to be here, but hope things don't
get too crowded. The Victoria area is particularly attractive, and as a result
seems to have a lot of illegal multi-family units (like one in four); similarly
in Vancouver. Our official population is supposed to be 750,000 but it's really
around 1,000,000 or more. We suspect a lot of illegals reside here. A lot of
Asians and Americans. If the City of Victoria ever cared to act on the illegal
units, they could make even more money, but the hotels and restaurants of
the tourist trap economy would be sadly missing its vital staff, and the area
would suffer accordingly. Like America would miss its Wall
Mart staff.

Some
years back at a meeting in Japan with science policy experts I was approached
at the break with following idea. That as the Japanese population
becomes older and infirm perhaps Canada might be a place which would see this
as a business opportunity. Open up for profit seniors homes in Canada
and provide 24/7 care. Solves a problem within Japan and creates
an opportunity for Canada.
I
don't recall my reply.
Our
vast space looks good to those who live in crowded
conditions.
They
should first see/experience the winters and the state of nature (especially
black flies and mosquitoes), once the snow has gone !!!)

You could see a million chinese
arribing Canada, the USA or any other part of the world. In fact, I think
that we will see it, it is a matter of time. Remember Tibet, a country
invaded by the chinese. Canada is not as close, but...

Didn't _all_ Canadians and Americans (or their parents
etc.) once "land on the beaches"...? Double standards again?
Will future Hollywood flicks show Chinese settlers defending "their" land
against attacking hordes of Yanks in the far west ?
Is the boat
full already, with 1/50 of the pop.density of
Europe?
