Hi!

Bill Moyer talking of John Wesley – the founder of Methodism - in a speech. As you know, my direction is justice rather than charity.

“I don’t think philanthropy has had a more compelling mandate than John Wesley’s. It was his inspiration to see that while charity may be good for the soul, justice is the salvation of society. Social justice became his great passion, the moral purpose of his calling.”

Justice is indeed the salvation of society but, I would argue, social justice is not.

Bill was talking from the point of view of philanthropy, so charity was his keynote. I think however that Wesley was right. While charity may bind their wounds, justice would make the body whole.
