How do cheap imports make domestic food profitable to produce ??

Cheap imports make domestic food production unprofitable because in the
presence of cheapo competition, expensive food is hard to sell. The big
chains tend to import things that would grow here, from areas like EU and
North Africa just because it's so much cheaper. People get blinded by low
price and forget about quality. That's a pity because low food quality is
very expensive in resulting health costs. The usual externalization of
costs with "Free Trade".

As usual you ignore the difference between legitimate high price and
illegitimate money-making.
