Yesterday, the Berlin daily TAZ published a pretty long
article debunking this WHO report, titled "The U.N. lies", at
http://www.taz.de/pt/2006/04/22/a0120.1/text

Some points from the article:

- The WHO report is based on a very incomplete and partial literature
review. Many very important studies in Russian were left out.

- The central basis for the estimated death toll is the 10 year old Cardis
"expertise" that only considers cancer victims in Belorussia, Russia and
Ukraine up to 1995. But it ignores that a third of the radiation exposure
occurs after 1995, it ignores the long latency time of cancer and it
ignores that many of the Chernobyl deaths are due to other illnesses
(cardiovascular, depressions etc.) - a Minsk cardiology professor observed
a 9-fold increased cardiovascular mortality among liquidators. Despite
ignoring all that, Cardis predicted 9,000 deaths, but the IAEA reduced even
that number to 4,000.

- The WHO only considered 200,000 of the 6-800,000 liquidators in the
30km-zone. The exposure measurements are extremely incomplete. For 91% of
the Belorussian liquidators, no measurements exist at all. The Ukraine
assumes that 94% of all surviving liquidators are ill. The suicide rate is
still high, probably 50,000 so far.

- The Soviets did everything to downplay the effects and death toll. The
U.N. is much too uncritical of this massive cover-up, with Russia still in
its "security" council.
