Steve, I’m addressing you, but it’s for everyone
to read. In fact, I’ll post this to several other places –
including some addresses of yours. The Dallas Federal Reserve Bank did a piece on Henry
George by its senior economist Robert L. Formaini – “Henry George:
Antiprotectionist Giant of American Economics”. It’s a biography as well as providing quotes from
George’s books. George was no stranger to despair. At one point with his
wife expecting their second child, starving, unemployed, and broke, he begged
in the street asking a man for help. The stranger gave him a few dollars.
George described with horror what might have happened had he not received the
money. Not a lot of years later, the Fabian Society was
debating George or Marx - they chose Marx, Later still the Liberal government
was destroying the power of the House of Lords because of George. Churchill’s speeches advocating George were gems
at that time. Sun-Yat-Sen – “the Father of Modern China”
– became a Georgist and this ultimately led to the incredible food
production on But . .
. . ? I got this cite from Frank
Walker in Anyway, the piece will give
you an indication of where I’m coming from. Just removing import
protection is not enough. There must be true free trade. As Cobden of the Anti-Corn
Law League, which brought Free Trade to 19th century “You who shall
liberate the land will do more for your country than we have
done in the liberation of its commerce.” So, what happened to George. For that you’ll have to read “The
Corruption of Economics” by Mason Gaffney. Here is the address for the
excellent piece. I hope you will read it. http://www.dallasfed.org/research/ei/ei0502.html#box Harry ********************************* 818 352-4141 ********************************* |
