Galbraith himself was capable of earthy talk. There are, he liked to
observe, two ways to feed oats to the sparrows. One is to feed the sparrows.
This is so obvious that it easily escapes attention. The other is to feed the
oats to the horses, compelling the sparrows to follow behind and peck what
they can from the droppings. The latter, the wise man added, passed by the
name of trickle down economics and was much beloved by the Ronald Reagans of
the world. Galbraith came from rural Ontario and, great as he became, he was
never ashamed to show it.
