Galbraith himself was capable of earthy talk. There are, he liked
to observe, two ways to feed oats to the sparrows. One is to feed
the sparrows. This is so obvious that it easily escapes attention.
The other is to feed the oats to the horses, compelling the
sparrows to follow behind and peck what they can from the
droppings. The latter, the wise man added, passed by the name of
trickle down economics and was much beloved by the Ronald Reagans
of the world. Galbraith came from rural Ontario and, great as he
became, he was never ashamed to show it.

Tomorrow's NYT magazine has a feature story on the anti-contraceptive
movement
in the United States. That's right, I did *not* say: anti-abortion.
The goal of the neo-cons (in case anyone hasn't recognized this already)
is to reverse the "enlightenment" orientation of persons lifing for
their own individual self-fulfillment, and get people to sacrifice
themselves for the clan (aka "God, country and Yale"...). These
people even believe sex *in* marriage is bad if it is not oriented
toward procreation, which leads to the interesting speculation that
breast-feeding is bad not only because it deprives Nestle of
sales if infant food, but also because it makes the "womb" inhospitable
to new life.
"These people" have an agenda. They, like the girls in the song, just
want to
have fun, and what they define as fun is making other persons' lives
miserable in the service of "higher goals".
