Subject: A.Word.A.Day--standpatism

This week's theme: words from games and sports.

standpatism or standpattism (STAND-PAT-iz-uhm) noun

The practice of refusing to consider change in one's beliefs and
   opinions, especially in politics.
One man's pig-headedly stubborn (Ah, that word "born", see!) is another man's
person of unwavering principle. ???

As long as we're having lexicological fun, NPR Car Talk today came up with
a word I really like [I am not fabricating here:] -- remember of th Diane Arbus photo of the baby with mucus running down from its nose (or a real baby doing
same)? The Car Talk guys came up with the word: Snotsicle! Yum!

On the positive side -- and I think this is a good economics moral tale -- I heard on NPR last week about a second-string Boston Red Sox catcher. The story said hardly anybody wants to be a second-string catcher. But this guy did. He caught
for Boston's knuckle ball pitcher [name forgotten]. So he was guaranteed
to play in every 5th game. Well, the Bosox apparently decided to be cost-effective
and sold him off last year. This year, the first 5 games the knuckleball
pitcher pitched, the catcher "passed" 10 balls, i.e., the catcher blew it (not the
pitcher threw wild). So, the Bosox realized they needed to undo their
action, and, fortunately, they were able to do so ("we" are not always so
lucky!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!).
They bought the catcher back, flew him to Boston in a chartered jet,
and had a police cruiser rush him to the stadium in time for the next
game the knuckleballer was scheduled to pitch. With no practice
since last year, the catcher caught the game with no errors. I think this
is a lesson that might be taught in econ 001 and MBA school, etc.

[The term has its origin in the game of poker. It stems from stand pat,
to play one's hand as it's dealt, without drawing other cards.]

-Anu Garg (gargATwordsmith.org)

"Compromise and common sense? Self-righteous standpatism and
pigheadedness? We ought to know which has the upper hand after the
   next three days."
Ray Fitzgerald; Sports; Boston Globe; May 6, 1980.
