Thanks for the citation, Brad. <sigh> Where to begin?
1. Fatwas are opinions from religiously inspired persons. They may or may not be taken as authoritative or correct by Muslims and others. Fatwas can contradict each other. 2. The BBC is not reporting that the fatwa opposed pharonic art; only that the fatwa responded to the question of Islam's position on statues. Yes, this was what impelled the Taliban to destroy the Buddha statues, but that was an additional step -- pre-Islamic art -- that this Egyptian fatwa does not seem to even address. 3. Yes, the BBC story reports on the concern of an Egyptian academic on the matter of growing religiousness in Egypt. But if I read it correctly, even this critic does not assert that the fatwa addressed the pharonic art. 4. Yes, the Muslim Brotherhood (al-Ikhwan al-Muslimin) is well organized, but its popularity has more to do with the effectiveness of the social services that it runs, than its religiosity. (I can say a lot more about this if anyone is interested.) 5. I do look to the BBC for a pointer toward facts; I do not rely on it for evaluation and forecasting. 6. I say again: the destruction of pharonic art a la Taliban/Buddha statues won't happen. Zero chance.
