Agreed! I'd love to have Ray back and active on this list.

Very good question!

I've always thought that returning the previously settled and hunted lands
and waters in question would be a good start.

I would be great to hear from Ray Evans Harrell on this one, though I'm sure
he would find it interesting to learn what people on this list consider
meaningful.

Well, good question, Chris. Off the top of my head, I can think of several
things:

A general review of Native American-immigrant relations. A blanket
unequivocal apology.

A major discussion on the present status of aboriginal peoples (social,
economic, political, educational, health, linguistic, etc), led by the
native Americans.

A pledge and performance by the governments to redress this status where it
is detrimental to the native people, in any way necessary (money, attention,
land/property, legal, law enforcement, rights and privileges, etc) AND
healthy. (I know, this will be sticky.)

A cessation of state- or tribe-sponsored casino and gambling activity.

Pledge and performance by the immigrant cultures to study and learn the
lessons of native culture and philosophies.

Review of school textbooks and curricula to represent north American history
more accurately. Review of archeological research to reduce pro-European
bias.

Special epidemiological and medical research into the effects on native
peoples of living in our current life-styles, and a program to redress the
impacts of health (diabetes, alcoholism, smoking, etc.)

An intense year of formal national reconciliation, design by immigrants and
natives together, in which significant participation by all is encouraged,
and which serves to 're-launch' our society.

Hmmmmm....I'll bet we can think of a lot more things that should be done.

What do you think?

I can't think of ANY good that came of the European
conquest of North America.

...

Very nasty people, those Europeans.

What do you suggest as a remedy, Lawry? Those Europeans should leave
North America? (and South America too, to be consistent)

Well, perhaps for a start, they should pay compensations to the Indians...
let's see -- Germany paid around $500 billion for those 6 million, right?
So... that makes about $2 trillion to be paid by Spain for Mexico alone!
