When unemployment leads to borrowing from family and friends, the experience can be stressful.

I think the basic idea of a basic income is needed. Otherwise, increasing numbers will be thrown to the dogs (see my other message) as automation grows. But I don't see how the middle class will stomach the taxation involved if it's to be a basic income for all. If we changed from income taxation to a sales tax then we could have a basic income for all the needy and the unemployed so long as it tailed off quickly when it met the lowest wages of those with jobs. Otherwise I see nothing but disaster.
