Steve,

I've a great deal of time for Matt Ridley -- qua biologist. He's written some extremely good books on genetics.

Appreciate, however, where he's coming from. Besides being a biologist he's also the scion of an aristocratic family with large land holdings whose relatives have been in the British establishment for a long time. He was also the Chairman of Northern Rock Bank during the only run on a bank by UK depositors in a century. Something between £20 billion and £30 billion had to be injected by the government -- that is, the British taxpayers. After being blamed by a House of Commons Select Committee for the irresponsible strategies of Northern Rock and "harming the reputation of the British banking industry" he was forced to resign.

But apart from that slight hiccup in his career his life is probably little different as he surveys his farms, fields and game-birds every day. He sees things a little differently from those who have lost their life savings and those who are now unemployed.

My bet's on you, Steve.

Keith
