Our particular form of faith says that your God is that which is the center of your universe and that transcends out of it. They also say that you were a part of the mind of the Transcendent [Equa Usquanigodi, the Great Mystery] and that you came here to experience what is not possible in the Mind that knows, is, all and eternal. That this place of limitations and uncertainty is necessary to learn something.
That in this world you can choose to be or not to be connected to the Eternal, each other, a place, a profession etc. (Cherokees like Shakespeare.) Patterns are the way in which we organize the world in our minds and the full development of all of the senses means that we will have the tools to perceive patterns that go beyond. However; most of all, this world is about perception of it, the Natural World and our work is always in some way about how we can keep the Garden up and going for those spirits who will come after us. We believe we are the Gardeners and that our only way to happiness is to continue the Garden and our place within it. Inside of that sphere is responsibility as well for all life in the Garden. We have a responsibility to be good tenants and to make the beds and leave it as we found it. In fact Cherokees have a reputation for leaving things as if they were never there when it comes to traditional thought about the natural world. Control means that you have the ability to make things flower. It also means that you admit that when you take something or change it, something else gives and is lost. You can do that but ultimately you must pay rent for what you did. That's the "invisible hand" to us. We call it Ulanigvgv and it means responsibility and also power. We don't "let it be", we use it but we are responsible for growing its replacement and leaving whole as a system. The only control is knowledge and the knowledge to say no to destruction and exploitation of all life for simple survival. So like the gods we imitate we think we can be happy, become all that we were meant to be and live lives of pleasure, fulfillment and ease. For women it means to have choice. Choice to marry. Choice to have a career. Choice to have children, or not. For both men and women it means choice over lifestyle, choice of food, vitamin supplements, exercise routines, cosmetic surgery, etc.,etc. In this intense moment of human history there is a pause as we move from a largely unselfconscious existence to an almost painfully self-conscious existence. We have moved through the "is this all there is" time, to a time characterized by "we can become what we want, what we imagine". Add to this a widespread background fear that the "party" may be over soon: peak oil, global warming (name your concern or fear) and there seems little reason to "settle down" and invest in family formation for the future. Our hubris is paradoxically causing us to hit the pause button which governs longer term trends while we choose our immediate futures in the here and now: Anyone for a new diet or a new health supplement or a new exercise routine or perhaps a new exotic destination? I think that it is this more than anything else that is causing some of the trends in the "developed" world. Of course no one knows what is going on.
