Hi Ray,

I'd love to participate if you have a slot available.

Cheers, Lawry

To the Future of Work list:

I’m going to be starting a Virtual Medicine Wheel on the subject of the
“meaning of apprenticeship” based in my own studies with the man who I
apprenticed with. I have five spots open on a 32 position wheel. Each
person will pick a name that is anonymous and a place on the wheel. The time
for the wheel will be daily and the texts will be sent out so that members have
them at the beginning of the day. When members respond it will be with the
name they took and the only knowledge of the person behind the name will be the
leader (me) and I won’t tell.

Reponses are short, usually no more than seven lines. The purpose of the
wheel is to build consciousness and awareness through group observation around
a specific text. The texts are from our traditions on apprenticeship and
traditional education, but one can come from any tradition to sit at the
wheel. The requirement is daily reading and response according to what you
feel is correct for you. The readings are about as long as a newspaper
article with some as short as American news but many extending to the length of
a British newspaper article. Each person at the Wheel provides a mirror
on the text so that a greater consciousness can grow from the observations.
Each day I will “digest” the comments into a single e-mail and send them out
after 6 pm for everyone to experience the knowledge and responses of each
other.

There is no cost for this. It is a service that we do in the interest of
cross cultural communication and the exploration of problem solving in the
context of a traditional structure that is known as the Medicine Wheel or the
Wheel with paths etc. There is no proselytizing or making people into
something they are not. Cross Cultural respect is the rule of the list
although everyone should understand that there is some language that reflects
the 500 year conflict between European people and the Indigenous peoples of
this place. That means that occasionally there will be comments about
“White” people. I leave them in because many of the texts are old and speak
to the conflict of the ancestors with the people invading their lives.
History is just history and current prejudicial dis-respect is not allowed from
any sector. Passion is allowed, evolutionary change is encouraged and
truthfulness and personal generosity at the Wheel is required. It is the
same as if a French pianist gave a series of virtual readings about French
music to people from France with a smattering of professional pianists invited
from other countries.

We all “play the piano” but this is about our own culture’s history with the
instrument. (Metaphorical not literal statement)
