I think there's more to it than that, Harry.

  Ed,

A trade war means that sellers are competing to provide us with better
products at lower prices.

  Sounds pretty good to me.

Apropos John Gray's review of Ha Joon Chang's book, here's a brief note I
sent out privately a few days ago:

I don't know where the current situation is going, but what may be
happening is that the major powers, all of which are essentially capitalist
(including China) no longer fight on the battlefield, thank God, but they fight
for advantage in many other ways, trade and financial wars being pre-eminent
among them. It is this need to build themselves up at the expense of others
that we are witnessing in the current clash of currencies. I don't see the
adoption of a standard international currency for some time to come. Meanwhile
people buy gold as a place to hide, but as I remember from personal experience
in the 1980s, gold can go down as well as up.

I see John Gray as one of our foremost present day thinkers. While he may be
best known for "Straw Dogs", other books by him are well worth reading - e.g.
"False Dawn" and "Black Mass".

Book review by John Gray (Straw Dogs)

'' In the US, Obama's economic policies are being shaped by the same people
- many of them with close links to Wall Street - who dismantled Roosevelt's
curbs on the banking system during the Clinton era. American politics has been
captured by a financial oligarchy, and there is no prospect of meaningful
reform.''
