Both my wife and I sat and wept at the handmade orchestra. This was the
story of our own lives and the meaning of music to it. A Prayer, with mere
enjoyment too hopelessly meaningless. The Orchestra was Peter Drucker's
model for the nation and the corporations in the 21st century. Tom Stewart
first mentioned it to me and then Drucker did before he died. Tom said:
"What do you think he meant?" Drucker said: "They'll never understand."
Well I can tell you what I think he meant. The orchestra is a vicious
place if you are ill prepared, uncommitted, unfocused, inept or
undisciplined. Every player is a ferocious beast, if you don't hold up
your
end. An orchestra is controlled from one of two directions. By a
dictator who shapes everything. Sometimes benevolent. Sometimes violent
but always a dictator with a nasty tongue, a sharp wit and a simple yes or
no as to your destiny in the organization. Next to the conductor, the
local CEO being (paid) millions is rarely up to the quality, competence,
understanding or pure performance knowledge that is required of the
conductor. A CEO will ask for less while a conductor will ask for your
heart, soul and brain and then piss on it if you don't (fit) the texture.

The second structure of an orchestra is like the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra
in New York City. It has no conductor, but the requirements of each
individual for coherence, cohesion, personal artistry and the ability to
think like a singular entity would put Peter Senge and his Learning
Organization model to shame. Orchestras are the quintessential organization
that learns, remembers and adds to the meaningful aural patterns of life.
They are not a game of winning and losing but instead make the greatest and
most complicated aural structures make sense, become crystal clear and most
of all, for the purpose of culture, memorable. They express our highest
rituals and our moments of greatest tragedy and vulnerability. They are
the band on the Titanic that played until the ship was almost gone and then
shook hands with each other for the pleasure of the ride together.
