I'm just back from almost two months travelling in various parts of China including a lot of the places that are mentioned in the article and pretty much all of what is said rings true with me. (I had the opportunity of getting rather below the normal tourist circuit because I was travelling with my son who is fluent in Mandarin.) I'll be publishing my blogpost on the trip/my research next week sometime as well.
