It took a conservative Republican, Richard Nixon, to open relations with communist China. The Republicans would have never allowed a Democratic President to do the same. Now we seem to be in reverse. Democrats defend programs for the evolution of all of the classes of the nation, when Republicans attack them, and then turn around and cut them like a Republican. Today it takes a Democratic President Harvard Scholar to kill these programs for academic excellence in history that hurt conservatives because of the program's truth telling. They say "Down with scholarship because scholarship is a liberal left wing plot." It's hard to support a President because he is less bad than the other side. What kind of ideals and life for a society is that?

Those cuts have become a reality at the Department of Education, which recently announced that no new awards will be made in the Teaching American History (TAH) program for the remainder of the fiscal year. Lee White, executive director at the National Coalition for History, has also alerted us to a new bill, the Setting New Priorities in Education Act <http://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/BILLS-112hr1891ih/pdf/BILLS-112hr1891ih.pdf> (H.R. 1891), which would not only eliminate more than forty programs at the Department of Education but would also phase out the TAH program entirely. The report compares the results for fourth, eighth, and twelfth graders with the results from three previous assessment years across racial, ethnic, and gender lines. The disappointing results--just 12 percent of twelfth graders demonstrated proficiency in the 2010 test, and only eighth graders improved their scores in any significant way since 2006--prompted the U.S. education secretary Arne Duncan to issue a statement saying that "these results tell us that, as a country, we are failing to provide children with a high-quality, well-rounded education."
