A possibly interesting "futurework" data point...

About 6 years ago now I set up and continue to run an academic Journal of
Community Informatics http://ci-journal.net ... The Journal basically runs
for no cash expenditure.

There are (somewhat significant) costs associated... but they are absorbed
by other parties... the software is freeware supported by a university and
developed with government grants. the system runs on donated server space.
I do the editing/management funcitions gratis as do the tech support people
and the layout people (both with university bases that allow for some
flexibility in doing this kind of thing... and of course reviewing and
editing is donated as per most academic journals...

(This approach is getting a wee bit difficult to maintain so I'm going for
funding through Canada's academic research funder and as part of that I've
put together some stats on the journal which might be of interest here...

(I have only the barest sense of what this means in a larger context but
that there is some larger significance particularly concerning the
amplification capacity of the Internet and the fluidity (who pays who for
what) of the economic relationships and structures in a technology mediated
knowledge economy I think this below makes evidently clear.

(Thinking about it now it occurs to me that looking at the numbers below we
should probably be looking at advertising as our base for economic support.

(We have only just now installed Google Analytics for JoCI. Here are some

But here are the most interesting ones (indicating that we seem to be
getting more visitors in a week than what most understand to be the total
annual readership for an average academic journal) and our readers are very
widely distributed.
