When I came to New York in the 1960s, I paid my voice teacher $40 per lesson
and he was not the most expensive by any means. The dollar has risen seven
times since that time. Voice Coaches in New York today make $60 bucks a
lesson and teachers average $100. This is a very specialized business
that demands high education that runs into the hundreds of thousands and
lessons per week upkeeps just as a psycho-analyst has a supervisor. The
cost of living here is also atrocious. It's true that the highest paid
teachers are about 25% below the fees in the sixties but most teachers make
a little more than half of what I paid my New York Teacher at the time.
Also the sixties had rent control on apartments so that teachers could have
enough space to truly develop the concert and opera work. Today we have no
rent control and teach in closets for rents double and triple the rate of
what is left of the Rent Control. As I said years ago on this list.
Artists always lead the way. Welcome to our world.
