You might want to become an Adjunct Prof at a nearby univ. This may get
you some privileges that the univ library is paying for. Check it out.

Actually, google is very good. What annoys me is that, not
infrequently, when I want to get beyond the journalistic level, beyond
what's on Wikipedia or pop-sci pages at universities, I discover that
JSTOR or Elsevier or a similar site wants me to pay $30 to have my
very own personal copy of some scientific paper.

I used to have library cards at the Dalhousie Killam Lib and at the
medical school lib and could, in any case, walk in and photocopy any
article for which they held the right journal.

I don't know if that policy has changed, what with vastly more
academic journals, higher prices on them, distribution on CD or via
special network access accounts. But I had to drive 75 miles to do it
30 years ago. Halifax hasn't gotten any closer, has grown busier and
more annoying in that time and I'm less inclined to make the trip
anyhow. Seems as though the net should be the perfecr vehicle for
disseminating scientific knowledge but I keep hitting a wall.

Of course, every so often, google turns up a paywall version of an
article and also a copy on some other site that's free. But not
always.

I wonder if I can enroll in some course for free (under some
golden-agers' plan) and get a uni ID that lets me into JSTOR and the
like with a uni password. Must look into that. I'd even take a shot
at passing the course -- several things I'd like to know more about
if I had some guidance in selecting the right stuff to read.
