My guess Ray was that they weren't even aware that their analysis was the
conventional Marxist one... They just thought they were being clever and
original and "realistic" and they probably haven't read Hobsbawm or the NLR
folks on this at all.

Have you noticed how Frank Luntz and the Tea Party love to claim that the
Third Reich was Socialist like Obama and today's Democrats. Stories are
just stories. We call it gaslighting. Claim someone else is doing
what you are in fact doing and want to draw attention away from yourself.
Comes from an old studio movie about a bad husband. Have you noticed
how Richard Armey loves to use old Soviet Agitprop phrases? It
culminated in the "Homeland Security" department which was smacks of Eastern
European agitprop phrases. In the mini-series Amerika the American
version of the Soviets set up a country in the American center called "My
Heartland." Armey's bills in Congress all read like they were American
translations from the Russian. The rightwing is really into Strategic
Thinking, Giving, Etc. What do you believe the strategy was in quoting
Marxist analysis by a market oriented essentially Right leaning publication?
Are they becoming Marxists or are they.....?

Agree. Mostly. With the loss of confidence and outright distrust of
politics and politicians it is difficult to say where the false
consciousness lies. Does it lie with the "yes we can crowd" or with the
"balance budgets crowd".

Perhaps information overload is leading to infoglut. And confusion.

Ray,

Fascism/Naziism were both anti-elite movements at least in their formal
"political" presentation... Certainly they were both financed by one section
of the elite but the overall intent by the traditional elites who were the
backers, was to gain political power which they felt that they had lost to
more liberal (progressive) elites backed by popular movements which it was
feared were ultimately uncontrollable (Communist movements, radical trade
unions etc.etc.)

The Stratfor analysis is (surprisingly) very close to the traditional
Marxist analysis of the rise of (European) Fascism in the thirties and
concerning say LePen and his Euro counterparts.

Where I disagree with them is

    1. they ignore the notion of "false consciousness" i.e. folks supporting
political positions that are in direct contradiction to their material
interests (the Tea Party for example). The reason this is important is
because if one takes this line of thought then at some point the
contradiction needs to be resolved--either through the imposition of some
form of external "order" a la Fascist authoritarianism or through a
reversion to support for one's direct interests through socialist movements
or even, as we are seeing in the UK at the moment, nihilist insurrection.

    2. they ignore the rise of the media, and ICTs and particularly the new
social formations that have emerged as a result. I'm not exactly sure how
they figure into the type of analysis that Stratfor has done here but 24
hour news, the social media, the rise of the "new technology mediated
(middle) classes" in all societies needs to be accounted for in any analysis
of this kind.

The Tea Party started by Dick Armey and funded by the Koch Brothers was a
movement against elites? Give me a break? The market hates Obama. The
hate regulation. Stratfor is still peddling the same old market junk they
did years ago. Global Intelligence indeed? Just another pawn of the
wealthy.

Global Economic Downturn: A Crisis of Political Economy

By George Friedman | August 9, 2011

Classical political economists like Adam Smith or David Ricardo never used
the term "economy" by itself. They always used the term "political economy."
For classical economists, it was impossible to understand politics without
economics or economics without politics. The two fields are certainly
different but they are also intimately linked. The use of the term "economy"
by itself did not begin until the late 19th century. Smith understood that
while an efficient market would emerge from individual choices, those
choices were framed by the political system in which they were made, just as
the political system was shaped by economic realities. For classical
economists, the political and economic systems were intertwined, each
dependent on the other for its existence.

The current economic crisis is best understood as a crisis of political
economy. Moreover, it has to be understood as a global crisis enveloping the
United States, Europe and China that has different details but one
overriding theme: the relationship between the political order and economic
life. On a global scale, or at least for most of the world's major
economies, there is a crisis of political economy. Let's consider how it
evolved.
