Ostrum was the first and only woman to receive the Nobel prize for economics, realized in 2009. She has focused her research on cooperative, trust-based management of the commons, the third system (the first two being centralized or governmental and the second being corporate) that goes mostly ignored by traditional economic theorists. The first link gives you an overview of Elinor Ostrom's work, and the second leads you to her lecture (pdf) on the research. She followed the successes of sustainable, natural systems in various parts of the world for over fifty years, and compared their approach with the usually disappointing outcomes of the other big two. Did anyone mention her before?
