Arthur,
It's yet another piece of evidence that the "Lump of Labour" is true
after all. Among a minority of the population in all advanced
countries (up to 30%?) people are working longer hours and earning
more than ever before, but the majority have not only been working
shorter hours and earning less than ever before (in real terms since
about the 1980s) but are also producing a jobless surplus which is
gradually working its way inwards from both ends of the adult age range.

Subject: Middle-Class Areas Shrink as Income Gap Grows, New Report Finds -

The portion of American families living in middle-income neighborhoods has
declined significantly since 1970, according to a new study, as rising
income inequality left a growing share of families in neighborhoods that are
mostly low-income or mostly affluent.
The findings show a changed map of prosperity in the United States over the
past four decades, with larger patches of affluence and poverty and a
shrinking middle.
