Ray,

Brooks is spot on -- mostly. America has always been behind Western Europe in most things. Even in the department in which it presently has a clear lead -- scientific research -- it has only been due to stealing most of the very best brains of Europe for almost a century now.

However, I dispute one of Brook's opinions. He writes: "Maybe before long our political leaders will actually summon the political will to take on the special interests that defend these tax breaks." Bankrupt Western European governments are already largely dysfunctional with regard to taxation and the future viability of their welfare systems. US Congress, having followed us down the welfare road so far, will have to find its own answers. Maybe it will, maybe it won't. We don't have any solutions so far.
