You might want to take a look at Mark Sundeen, the subject of The Many Who Quit 
Money. He is a quite interesting fellow, who decided to live without 
money/currency, and to minimize his needs. Sincere, smart person, personable, 
but without any illusions that the population as a whole might adopt his 
approach to living.
