Heard this on the radio this morning. Fifteen years later, we get
the scoop. May the example be more swiftly followed now that it's
news: we don't need to pay out huge salaries to acquire and attract
staff capable of generating tourism. Natalia http://www.digitaljournal.com/article/328649 Meet Talkeetna's mayor, a cat named Stubbs Talkeetna
- A 15-year-old cat named Stubbs, has been mayor of Talkeetna
for most of his life. The cat has been the mayor of the small
tourist town in Alaska with about 900 residents for more than a
decade.
The cat, described as "part-manx," was named
honorary mayor of Talkeeetna, shortly after he was born.
KTUU-TV reports locals call the cat "Mayor Stubbs."
According to Lauri Stec, who works at Nagley's General Store in
Talkeetna, where Stubbs spends most of his time, "He was just in
the Alaska Magazine, and he's been featured in a few different
things."
KTUU-TV
reports that 15 years ago, some residents of the town did not
approve of the candidates who were running for mayor, so as a
way of expressing their feelings, they convinced people to elect
Stubbs as a write-in candidate, and he won.
Local tour guides have been playing practical jokes on thousands
of tourists who visit the town in summer. Skye Farrar, who also
works at Nagley's, said: "Their tour guides will trick them.
They'll tell them to go to Nagley's and ask for the mayor."
Stec said: "Oh my gosh, we probably have 30 to 40 people a day
come in who are tourists wanting to see him."
The
Denver Post reports that Stubbs gets letters and cards
from people everyday.
Stubbs always keeps a particular appointment at Nagley's.
Talkeetna resident Jerry Roach, said: "Every day he goes in
there and has catnip in a wine glass." According to the
Daily Mail, Mayor Stubbs has a Facebook page
with almost 1,000 friends, more than the 900 residents of the
town at the base of Mount McKinley.
Residents sum up the major benefit of Stubbs' mayorship as
increased tourism for the town. Farrar said: "I'm very confident
that Talkeena will be A-OK, as long as we have Stubbs around."
People of the town say they hope that as the word spreads about
Mayor Stubbs, more tourists will be visiting Alaska just to see
him.
