So far, Rogoff has been slightly more right than wrong. However, he is disingenous because automation elicits more dumbed-down jobs with steadily deteriorating wage rates which put the 80-class even more clearly on the other side of the divide where the rich, the professionals and the reasonably well-paid interesting jobs reside.
Ludd: "Emperor Rogoff is Still Naked" <http://ecologicalheadstand.blogspot.ca/2012/10/ned-ludd-emperor-rogoff-is-still-naked.html>http://ecologicalheadstand.blogspot.ca/2012/10/ned-ludd-emperor-rogoff-is-still-naked.html
On the other hand, even if we've reached the end of a "vital push for innovation and new technologies" as regards the production of consumer goods (there aren't any uniquely new ones in the pipeline) there's plenty more to go in the fields of health care (weeding out the increasing number of harmful gene variations) and (mainly) infrastructure materials (replacing metals with superior performance carbon-based materials ultimately produced from DNA-based machine tools).
