upset that the oceans are being overfished.

Good! And when the oceans are finally grabbed and fully exploited
then national fishing industries will collapse and the few remaining
fish of each species will survive, even if it takes a century or
longer for them to return to full stocks. In the meantime, it will
help to reduce the existing world population at a faster rate than otherwise.
We really ought to stop being patronizing about the "low"
intelligence of would-be parents. they know how to control family
size as well as anybody else (almost as well, anyway, given a smaller
choice of methods). What is stronger than their individual decisions
is not lack of modern contraceptives but the prevailing culture.
Because Western do-gooding intellectuals think they are guided by
reason they are in denial about the sheer power of peer pressure.
As soon as Oxfam supplies food to a starving population then, if it's
an agricultural culture, the women resume having too many children.
Unless Oxfam starts sending TVs and washing machines along with food,
real alleviation will be delayed another generation.
