Thanks for forwarding such an interesting (and apposite) article. Louise Story must also be commended for the research it entailed. It would require a lot more research, however, to establish just how much businesses are gaining at the expense of the public (via state government) in strictly financial terms. It is this (when collated from all US states) that actually determines the net money flow and thus the respective political strengths of corporations versus governments as they decline or prosper in the coming years. (Relative to the other -- the balance won't stay the same, to be sure.) It is salutary to remind ourselves that every single 'advanced' government is deep in debt but that almost all large multinational corporations are awash with profits.
