My reservation was the Quapaw otherwise known as the downriver people of the Sioux Nation. Trudell speaks for what I was taught from birth. Strangely, it was hidden in the Baptist Church since the government banned our religions until I was living in New York City singing opera in 1978. That was when all of the doors opened and I understood the conflicts I had with non-Indian Baptists all of my life. Although I still respect their individuality and insistence upon everyone's meeting the eternal realities on their own and not through someone else. No one is born for you and you will die for yourself and all life is the child of the Lifegiver. How is this for "critical" thinking Steve?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GhpYEvZ-Oz4 This is a short 9 minute comment on You tube by John Trudell. Trudell and the American Indian Movement was subdued by the FBI at Wounded Knee. They put one of the leaders, Leonard Peltier, in jail who Amnesty International consistently labels as a political prisoner. Since the opening of Guantanamo and the institution of the Patriot Act, Amnesty no longer has just one American Political prisoner and Peltier has become ignored, until he dies and someone writes an opera about him. His writings and attitude from prison have been impressive. Lots of good stuff there for a libretto. Philip Glass or John Adams? Bertrand Russell admired the Greeks but admitted the self destruction but on the other hand complained about the Chinese who lasted thousands of years. As we get to know them (the Chinese) better, outside the British stereotype of them, a different, even more impressive people emerges. We made fun of the Soviets and their plodding nature but we also embargoed all of the Communist Nations and kept them out of their potential until they exploded. Now that they are "capitalists" their workers immigrate everywhere and are the most well trained workers in the world and they have unwritten "clans" in each profession. One could call them informal unions. The problem is neo-classical and monetarist economics purely and simply. It is a cancer on the face of society that creates classes and keeps the poor ignorant and buying. They are called gadflies. You know, people like Socrates, who is probably the best-known critical thinker in Western history. And, at least the well-educated among us know what happened to him.
