Enter www.shadowstats.com . Computing unemployment as the Bureau of Labor Statistics did before 1980s and 1990s adjustments, one finds that US unemplyment hovers around 23%. But now, move over for even more shocking data. Factoring "disability" into the unemployment rate, it appears that 30% of the US work force is not, in fact, working. A new study suggests that 1996 changes in welfare law induced States to shift people on welfare into the disability categoring - where benefits are 100% paid by the federal government. The study is by Chana Joffe-Walt: "Unfit for Work: The Startling Rise of Disability in America."
