REH From: futurework-boun...@lists.uwaterloo.ca [mailto:futurework-boun...@lists.uwaterloo.ca] On Behalf Of Sally Lerner Sent: Friday, June 14, 2013 9:36 AM To: futurework@lists.uwaterloo.ca Subject: [Futurework] FW: Income first, because "income is the biggest determinant of health status" _____ From: Rob Rainer [rob.causewo...@gmail.com] Sent: Friday, June 14, 2013 9:19 AM Subject: Income first, because "income is the biggest determinant of health status" On June 4th in Ottawa, I observed Dr. Anna Reid, President of the Canadian Medical Association speak to the All Party Anti-Poverty Caucus on "action on poverty to improve the health of Canadians." Dr. Reid's presentation included the statement that "income is the biggest determinant of health status." This followed a recent CBC news segment on "how treating poverty works like medicine, doctors say: financial support can pay off with better health." Click <http://www.cbc.ca/news/health/story/2013/05/24/poverty-disease.html> here for that story including a short video featuring Toronto physician Dr. Gary Bloch and Dr. Richard Stanwick, President of the Canadian Pediatric Society. According to Dr. Bloch, "treating people at low income with a higher income will have at least as big an impact on their health as any other drugs that I could prescribe them." Indeed, <http://www.cma.ca/socio-economic-factors-health-care-spending> according to the CMA, 50% of the health status of Canadians can be attributed to "life circumstances" while 20% of health care spending is because of "socio-economic factors". Not surprisingly, then, at the CMA's <http://www.cma.ca/guaranteed-annual-income-health-equity> April 23rd town hall meeting in Calgary the idea of basic (or guaranteed) income "was raised as a serious option for addressing...health inequities." Indeed, basic income is now a right idea at a right time. The BIG Push is a new national campaign led by Basic Income Canada Network (BICN), a non-profit group founded in 2012 and which is also the Canadian affiliate of <http://www.basicincome.org> Basic Income Earth Network. Through The BIG Push, we strive to raise public awareness of basic income, build public support for an expanded system of basic income in Canada, and secure public commitments for and delivery of this system so that everyone has true and sufficient income security. Our shorter term goal is to see the advent and completion of one or more 5-year basic income pilot initiatives so that more evidence of the benefits and costs of basic income can be gathered from within Canada. Further on The BIG Push, please see the attached message from BICN Board Chair Kelly Ernst, and/or contact me for a detailed campaign prospectus. We welcome queries for campaign involvement and support. Please help us now push for a modernized social security system in which basic income is foundational.
