One interesting thing to come out of the Russian government
this past week concerning the disaster of the nuclear submarine
Kursk is President (Pope?) Putin's explanation for why
he did not leave his vacation and go to the rescue scene:
"Everyone should keep to his place."
Here we have a clear reaffirmation of what Bertolt Brecht described
in his play "Galileo": that the reason why the Roman Catholic
Church did not appreciate Galileo illuminating
the people about the new astronomy was that if the
people started questioning the layout of the starry heavens,
they might also start questioning the layout of the social world
(in which the peasants revolved around their feudal lords, the
feudal lords around their prelates, and the prelates around
the immovable center of the cosmos -- the Pope himself!).
The Russian Orthodox Church was busy canonizing the
family of the last Czar for their suffering and martyrdom.
I looked at the Russian Navy website, and, in their picture
gallery, I did not find any picture of the battleship
Potemkin!
And history continues.... (Elsa Morante, _History: A Novel_)
