The body of this e-mail contains an announcement that may be
of interest to members of this list who are interested in
alternatives to mainstream economics "Principles" (the approach
used to introduce college students to the neoclassical
paradigm.) Note that, unfortunately, our sources of financial
support cannot be offered outside of the U.S.; however, we are
also looking for reviewers/users of the alternative micro-economics
textbook that we have developed, and would be glad to hear from
people anywhere in the world who are interested in this. (It
has already been translated into Russian, and is about to be
translated into Vietnamese; we have made a first pass at a revision
for countries with a longer capitalist tradition than those two.)

FUNDING OPPORTUNITY FOR PRINCIPLES TEXT WORKSHOPS

If you are interested in pedagogical materials for economics principles
courses that stress issues of concern for the contemporary world -- and
if there are graduate students in your department who wish to explore
alternatives to the mainstream paradigm -- then you may wish to know
about an opportunity now being offered by the Global Development And
Environment Institute at Tufts University.

Up to four grants will provide financial, logistical, and conceptual
support for graduate student and faculty workshops at universities in
the United States during the academic year 2000-1. In each workshop,
six to eight students and a faculty leader will receive honoraria for
time spent preparing material for a bi-weekly discussion critiquing
standard micro principles texts and exploring "alternative" textbooks.
(Faculty leader: $2,500; Graduate students, $1,000 each; host economics
department, $1,000.) Results of each workshop will be shared among
interested economists in this country; foreign links are also being
established.

The project is intended to provide pre-publication feedback on the draft
of a new text, Microeconomics in Context, to aid in the preparation of
a critical commentary on mainstream Principles texts, and to support the
efforts of economics faculty interested in preparing heterodox micro
courses.

If you might be interested in organizing a workshop at your university,
or in reviewing the draft of Microeconomics in Context, please e-mail a
reply to [EMAIL PROTECTED], including your name and university affiliation,
and we will send you a proposal application and a partial text draft as
a pdf file. For further information please go to our web page:
http://ase.tufts.edu/gdae/summaries/MicInContext/workshopannounce.htm.

Please forward this message to potentially interested colleagues!
