And what is so odd about all this is that leaders keep saying we are (and we
need to be) building a knowledge society.  Pretty difficult to see how this
will come about if we don't value and honour learning and teaching.

We have a bad scene in public education in Ontario right now.  School boards
are being amalgamated and consolidated, schools are not being adequately
funded, and the government is doing a lot of teacher bashing.  Teaching
seems to have moved from being an honourable profession to doing something
if you are absolutely forced to.  Young teachers are quitting because they
can't stand the insults and the pressure.  I'm sure the situation will work
itself out eventually, but right now it borders on chaos.
