"Didn't this "tradition" begin to end with the advent of capitalism in
England in the 18th century? Each locale and nation was to produce only
what it could produce cheaper than others, due to
the unalloyed virtues of "free trade"".

"Isn't (wasn't) pre-capitalist trade in some parts of the world (e.g.,
Polynesia) conducted more as a mechanism of preserving social cohesion,
than for any mercantile reason?

Ed Said:
Actually there are two ultimately two kinds of trade. One is trade that
takes place by and for the people of a city state (since before Hammurabi)
using a peoples own legal tender as currency.

The other is trade that takes place both within a nation state inter
city-states, that is conducted using a privately created currency, (created
with an expiry date and at interest) which ultimately consumes the nations
that use that private currency. The Bad money (private) drives the Good
money (legal tender) out of circulation.

The invisible hand spins the social centrifuge, dis-integrating each
individual person into "sovereign consumer" and universally oppressed producer
"siamese twin" individually unviable personae.
