I'm not the right person to comment, since I haven't attended one in thirty
years. They may have lost some of their prestige since then because the
population as a whole has become somewhat better educated and perhaps
inclined to be more critical. They may also have lost some of their primacy
of place because a system of community colleges has taken over some of their
educational functions. And the universities claim they are not as well
funded as they once were. There are more competing demands on public
purses. On the whole, however, they continue to turn out reasonably
competent people.
As for the woman at the Sorbonne who wrote the thesis on astrology, I would
be curious about what she wrote on. For example, perhaps she is a social
historian interested in the role astrology played in peoples lives or in the
decisions made by the ruling classes. I doubt very much that she was
granted a degree in astrology, but then I suppose anything is possible these
days.
