Robert Reich focuses on the negative side: that the "connectedness"
can *amplify* the symptoms of the treadmill rat-race. What he fails to
consider is the positive side: that the "connectedness" can bring about
a different, more pleasant system to *replace* the treadmill rat-race.
Take for instance the development of Open Source software. Or the fall
of the conventional (one-way) media's information monopoly thanks to the
Internet, that can bring about a whole new awareness. Just look how
desperately the establishment lawyers are now trying to clamp down on
Internet freedoms and intellectual "property" rights, to prevent the
status quo from being swept away by technical evolution.
