For immediate release (Toronto: 17-Sep-01)
Letter from Buzz Hargrove to David Collenette
Hon. David Collenette
Minister of Transport
104 East Block
Ottawa, ON K1A 0A6
Dear Minister
I am writing to request your governments immediate intervention
with financial support for Air Canada and all other Canadian airlines.
The tragic events of September 11 have put Canadas airline industry
in serious jeopardy. The effect of restructuring of the industry over
the last couple of years has led to, at best, a financial weak industry,
especially Canadas flagship carrier Air Canada.
The shutdown that occurred after the horrific events in the U.S. and
the predicted reduction in air passenger travel in Canada and around
the world over the next few months, places the future of all Canadas
carriers in jeopardy.
The burden of this problem cannot be placed on airline workers who
have been through incredible stress over the last few years, especially
since the death of so many of their colleagues who were on the
planes that the terrorists crashed into the World Trade Centre and the
Pentagon.
I would urge you, as Transportation Minister, to act immediately to
announce the necessary financial support of Canadas airline industry.
I would also request that you convene a meeting of all airline unions
and all airline companies, to start discussion on security issues at
Canadas airports.
Your cooperation is anticipated and appreciated.
Yours truly
Basil Buzz Hargrove
