Hi Harry, In those pre-Thatcher days it was quite rational for a miner (or a car assembly worker) to want his son to follow him, whatever the conditions, because they were earning fabulous wages. At Keresley colliery near where I lived miners were earning at least twice the salary of a doctor or dentist and maybe three or four times the wages of most workers. For many years in the automotive industry I earned substantially less than the engineers who worked for me.
In reporting the frequent disputes in the mines and the car industry in those days, the newspapers only quoted the (low) basic wages of these workforces and were afraid to quote the actual take-home pay which was amplified by all sorts of bonuses, contrived overtime, and so on. If they tried to do so, their own print workers (themselves earning far more than journalists and, sometimes, even editors) would go on strike on behalf of the miners or carworkers. So the public were generally unaware of the enormous wages in some sectors. Much of this has been blown away now in the private sector, not just because of Thatcher but usually because the industries concerned could no longer sustain these wage costs and collapsed of their own accord. Similar practices are now going on in government employment. In the Post Office, for example, towards the end of the week in the main sorting offices, workers will do a preliminary sort so that extra sorting is artificially manufactured for high-paid week-end shifts. Letters that should have arrived at the front door on Friday and Saturday will arrive on Monday or Tuesday of the following week. In the National Health Service, nurses leave the profession in droves once qualified only to return as temps being paid twice the pay (or more at the week-ends) of the full-time nurses. The same applies to teachers. Most state schools now need part-time teachers sent from the agencies, and the proportion is growing all the time. I think you know me well enough by now, Harry, to know that I am not anti-worker. But privileges are not just confined to the fat cats. Whether privileges are granted surreptitiously by financial backhanders to politicians, or by brute exploitation of circumstances, they amount to the same thing -- the public is fooled and have to pay more for the goods and services involved and/or far less efficiency than they should receive.
