"I can undersell your local producers: Let me at the people who
buy from them. Your workers will take lower wages than the
ones in my country: let the workers in my country find other jobs.
Get out of the way, you who would protect anything or anybody
from me!"
The message of Elias Canetti's book _Crowds and Power_, and
Werner Herzog's film "Aguierre, the Wrath of God" is the message
of the telos of so-called "free trade": The logical outcome
is for The Last Survivor to reign over universal devastation
he has brought about.
It is a shame that the gods have fled from our world. For
when Odysseus returned home to find "the suitors" living it
up in his house and trying to seduce his wife, and Odysseus
responded by setting out to annihilate them to the last man,
after a certain interval, Athena intervenes to stop the
fighting, talling him: "Enough".
Imagine Athena appearing to the Multinational CEOs of the
world, and telling them:
Enough!
It won't happen, because they don't believe in
myths.
Imagine them coming up with the idea themselves: "Enough!"
That won't happen either. But just because these
people don't believe in paradoxes doesn't mean they
aren't producing them.
Right on, Tom! I think you are lucky to live in Norway.
